Who Runs This Site, and Why You Should Care

Companion Critic exists to answer one question without fluff: which AI companion app deserves your money in 2026. Here is exactly who is asking you to trust that answer.

The disclosure, first and in plain words: Companion Critic is owned and operated by the team behind Swipey AI. We rank our own product #1. This is a comparison of how we stack up against alternatives, not an independent review.

How we work

Every app in our top-10 ranking gets held against the same five criteria: feature completeness, chat quality, content freedom, access and pricing, and character variety. The full breakdown, including how we weight each one, lives in our methodology. Three working rules sit on top of it:

Corrections policy: spot a stale price, a feature we got wrong, or a rival we sold short? Email contact@companioncritic.com. We review every report, and errors get fixed, not buried.

Who we are

This site is written and maintained by the Companion Critic Editorial Team, operated by the team behind Swipey AI. We are not going to invent staff names, stock-photo faces, or a fictional office to look more independent than we are. The people who compare these apps are the people who build the one ranked first, and that fact is printed near the rankings, in the footer, at the end of every article, and here.

Companion Critic is also one of ten sites in the Companion Review Collective, a network of AI companion comparison properties operated by the same team, each with its own angle and voice. You can see every site, and how they differ, on our network page.

Our reviewer

The testing and writing on Companion Critic come from one editorial desk, not a rotating cast of anonymous freelancers. Every review and comparison carries the same byline, so you always know who ran the bench.

Dex Calloway

Lead Reviewer, Companion Critic

Dex runs the hands-on pass behind every verdict on this site: signing up, holding real conversations, pushing voice, image, video, calls and live mode, then checking each app's content policy and pricing before a score goes up. The byline is honest about who we are, the team behind Swipey AI, and it is not a claim to be an independent third party or to hold outside credentials. It just means one accountable desk stands behind the scores, on one blunt rubric.

Why trust a site owned by a vendor?

Fair question. It is the first one we would ask. Our answer has three parts:

We show our criteria

The scoring rules are published, the weightings are stated, and the comparison table uses checkable facts. You never have to take a conclusion on faith; you can rerun the comparison yourself.

We name where rivals beat us

Character.AI has the deepest free library. Candy AI generates better images. Nomi holds longer memories. Replika does gentle companionship with more polish. All of that is printed on our homepage.

You can verify everything

Every platform we cover has a free tier or trial. Our strongest recommendation has always been: test before you pay, including with our own product.

No fabrication, ever

No fake user testimonials, no seeded comments, no invented statistics, no third-party ratings we didn't receive. Editorial opinion, clearly labeled, is the only kind of judgment on this site.

The blunt version: a disclosed bias you can audit beats a hidden one you can't. Plenty of "independent" review sites in this category are quietly paid by the apps they rank. We skip the pretense and show you the receipts.
